Why choose a physical therapist for personal training? How is a physical therapist different than a personal trainer? There are simple answers to these questions, and it’s something you should take into consideration when looking for a trainer who can specialize to your body. Let’s break down the differences.

A Physical Therapist Knowledge vs. a Personal Trainer’s Knowledge

Physical therapists have an intricate knowledge of joint biomechanics and the musculoskeletal system. They are extensively trained in the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular injury and dysfunction.

This background allows a physical therapist to work with clients and create modifications in order to reach their optimal function whether it be picking up a grandchild or running a marathon. It is their educational background and innate understanding of the human body that makes a physical therapist an ideal personal trainer.

Personal training at this time is an unregulated field, thus, any individual can take a weekend course and call themselves a certified personal trainer. As stated in career trend “The state of North Carolina does not legally require personal trainers who operate in the state to have any specific license, certification or registration.”

Physical Therapists are licensed professionals. They have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and gone through physical therapy school, which is an additional three years thus earning what is today a DPT. (Doctor of Physical Therapy) In turn, they must continuously pass an examination by a regulatory board. In the state of North Carolina every two years physical therapists must take this exam to continue education to maintain licensure.

Why do personal training at KCP?

KCP Physical Therapy introduced their personal training program in response to their clients’ needs. Many of our clients completed rehab and attempted working with trainers or returning to the gym and then became re-injured.

Joy and Joyce specialize in the management of musculoskeletal disorders and are highly skilled in designing personal training programs to meet each client’s individualized fitness needs while making sure their clients don’t re-injure themselves.

Call KCP for an assessment and begin your road to fitness while ensuring a safe injury free workout. Take a look at our client’s testimonials and reviews on Google, Facebook and our Website.

KCP is proud to provide many services to our patients. Trigger point needling, also known as dry needling, is one of these services. KCP’s leaders Joy and Joyce are both highly experienced manual therapists who are trained in trigger point dry needling. Many people don’t know much about dry needling, so let us tell you exactly what it is.

What is trigger point dry needling?

As defined by the American Physical Therapy Association:

“Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. Dry needling (DN) is a technique used to treat dysfunctions in skeletal muscle, fascia, and connective tissue, and, diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input,(pain) and reduce or restore impairments of body structure and function leading to improved activity and participation.”

Essentially dry needling is used to loosen muscles that are painful and tight from different health issues. Loosening muscle’s subject to trigger point is a common reason for dry needling.

What is a Trigger Point?

“A trigger point is a tight band of skeletal muscle that is located within a larger muscle group. A trigger point can be tender to the touch, and pressing on it can also cause pain to radiate to other parts of the body.” Dry Needling is an effective, direct approach to manage trigger points.

Dry needling treatment can be used to manage the issues such as, but not limited to:

Generalized musculoskeletal pain

Arthritis

Nerve irritation from the back or neck

Ligament strain

Low back pain

Neck pain
